Flatland by Edwin Abbott, is a classic. Published in 1884, it is a satire on life during the Victorian era. Secondary students can read the story a few chapters at a time. It can be purchased, but it is available online.

A palindrome is a word or a number that can be read the same way in either direction. For example, MOM is still MOM if read backwards. “A man, a plan, a canal, Panama” is a famous palindrome about the building of the Panama Canal.
Palindromes can also be numbers. 121 is still 121 if read from the other direction. This is a short collection of ideas and resources to facilitate students’ fun investigating palindromic numbers.
Place value is the corner stone for building numeracy. Having a base ten mat that shows the verbal – both the place value and the name for the manipulative, the numerical, as well as the pictorial helps students build stronger connections and deepen their understanding as they work with place value. Verbal, one-to-one, onto, and diagrammatic representations of functions will be studied as well as composition.
Modular Mathematics is an alternative for students and teachers who would like something different or something additional to support the building of function fluency in secondary mathematicians. And remember, just because a students can say something in words, it in no way shows that they can write those same thoughts. Those are two different skill sets.
Writing also provides opportunities for the verbal learner to excel as well as the creative learner. This beginning assortment of writing prompts can be adapted as needed for the course, topic, and level of the students. The important thing is to write! Venn diagrams offer a way to look at relationships between logical sets or mathematical sets. The circles are the sets, the elements are listed in their respective circles, and if there is an overlap, that region signifies the intersection of the sets. Venns can also be nested, when sets are subsets of each other.
A variety of Venns have been provided. There are basic, two circle that are configured to be folded and used in The Mathematicians’ Notebook or Journey’s Notebook.
